A Manawatu teenager has been sentenced to five years in prison for the manslaughter of his friend and injuring two people after crashing his car while drink driving.

Nineteen year old Ben Jagger from Bunnythorpe was found to be driving with twice the legal alcohol limit and had cannabis in his system when he spun out of control, crossed a median strip and collided with a Toyota Hilux on John F Kennedy Drive in Palmerston North.

The front-seat passenger in Jagger's Nissan Silvia, his 17-year-old friend Nathan Conlon, died after he flew threw the rear window and hit a fence.

Two people in the Toyota received minor injuries.

Jagger was previously caught drink driving in 2007 in Palmerston North and again in September.

At the High Court in Palmerston North on Wednesday morning, Justice Gendall said that offending in the same way just 10 weeks after the crash removes any mitigating feature of remorse.
