Teenage parents have left their newborn child at South Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman says the couple packed up and left the infant there on Monday but CYF northern director Marion Heeney said they had earlier told hospital staff the baby should be adopted.

The baby is believed to be that of a 14-year-old who was trying to hide the pregnancy from her parents.

Heeney says the baby is in Child, Youth and Family (CYF) care.
