The 17-year-old male killed in a single car crash on the West Coast early this morning has been named by police.
Peter Wayne Gleeson was the driver of the car when it crashed on Kaniere-Kowhitirangi Road, near Hokitika, about 1am today.
A male passenger, also 17, is in a critical but stable condition at Grey Base Hospital.
West Coast Police Sergeant Tim Crawford said the car veered off the left hand side of the road and struck a power pole, knocking the pole down.
The accident cut power to neighbouring properties and the valley.
Crawford said road conditions at the time of the crash were wet, but not icy.
Serious Crash Investigators are conducting a scene examination and the matter will be referred to the coroner.
