Teen dies while scuba diving

A 17-year-old boy has died while scuba diving near Gisborne.

The teenager was diving with a family member at Tatapouri Beach, 14km east of Gisborne, when he drowned about 6pm on Saturday, Inspector Paul Jermy of central police communications says.

He was brought ashore by boat and was attended to by ambulance staff, but had already died.

Jermy says it is unclear what had caused the drowning.
