A teenage driver is dead after crashing on a one-lane bridge near Otorohanga, 65 kilometres south of Hamilton, early on Sunday morning.

The crash happened about 3.20am on Mangawhero Rd. The driver was trapped in the car and died soon after he was freed by emergency services.

And the best efforts of emergency services were unable to save a South Taranaki motorcyclist, who died after crashing off State Highway Three north of Mokau on Friday night.

Ronald James Rupapera, 49, was part of a family convoy of vehicles heading to Kaitaia, transporting the remains of his father who died 18 years ago and was to be re-buried in his ancestral land in Northland.

Paramedics, ambulance staff and the Fire Service attempted to stabilise the man, but he died just before being placed into a rescue helicopter.
