The man convicted of beating an 85-year-old World War II veteran in the car park of his local RSA has been sentenced to nearly nine years in prison.

Maurangi Pere's attack on Eric Brady outside the Papatoetoe RSA was captured on a security camera.

It left the veteran heavily bruised with his jaw broken in at least two places.

His 19-year-old attacker will also be serving the sentence for a range of aggravated robbery and theft offences.
