Te Papa scores funding reprieve

Published: 7:50PM Thursday June 14, 2012 Source: ONE News

The national museum, Te Papa, has been saved from a major funding cut.

Wellington City councillors have voted to reinstate Te Papa's annual funding to $2.25 million.

The council originally proposed in its draft long term plan to reduce the museum's funding by more than one million dollars over the next 10 years.

But public protests and business opposition prompted the council to re-approve its full grant at a meeting this afternoon.

Te Papa Chief Executive, Michael Houlihan, has thanked everyone who wrote submissions, letters and post-it notes in support of the museum.
