The taxi industry will meet with the ministers of Transport and Labour on Wednesday to work out how they can make their drivers safer.

The discussion follows the violent death of Auckland Co-Op driver Hiren Mohini.

Taxi Federation spokesman Tim Reddish says they want to see security cameras made compulsory in cabs.

He says it won't be cheap, with each security camera costing $1,500.

Reddish says overseas cameras have had a powerful deterrent effect on bad passengers, while providing strong evidence if there is an incident.
