Motorists around the country are being advised to drive with extra care as the remains of Thursday's bad weather hangs around.
High winds, heavy rain and snow created havoc on roads in both the North and South Islands on Thursday.
Roading contractors had a busy day rescuing motorists trapped on
the Rimutaka Hill road because of heavy snow between Upper Hutt and
Wairarapa. Dozens of drivers were left freezing in their cars when
State Highway 2 closed on the hill on Thursday afternoon.
Heavy snow also fell in the Tararua district.
Drivers are still advised to take care on all main highways with
ice and possibly snow lingering.
MetService forecaster Chris Noble says weather conditions are improving and all roads should clear by Friday afternoon.
He says snow levels should rise in Marlborough and Canterbury on Friday morning.

And police are reminding drivers to be aware of the effects of fatigue when at the wheel, following a fatal car accident in Canterbury last week that left three people dead.
They say driver fatigue is often under-represented in crash statistics but contributes to more crashes than we realise as it's difficult to detect at the scene of a fatality.
