An alleged conwoman has apparently been caught out after her trick was exposed by media reports.
Police in Whitianga arrested two people after being alerted to a woman trying to obtain money from a cafe where she claimed she had been given food poisoning.
The story was similar to one which a woman used in Thames on Friday to swindle money from local cafes.
Her ruse was exposed after the cafe owners called each other and realised they had been visited by the same person. They informed businesses in the area and tipped off media to the story.
Yesterday in Whitianga, a 26-year-old Auckland woman was arrested and charged with fraud offences, while a 30-year-old Auckland man has also been charged. Both will appear in the Thames District court next week.
Police said the couple had travelled to Thames, Whangamata and Whitianga and want to hear from any businesses which may have also been targeted.
