Support urged before prison smoking ban

A warning today about a plan to ban all smoking in prison.

The Corrections Department is being cautioned that prisoners should receive proper support before the smoking ban comes into effect.

Corrections is expected to announce the ban this week, and it could be in effect by July next year.

The anti smoking group ASH says it support the plan, but prisoners need help to quit smoking first.

Greens support plan

Green MP David Clendon says any smoking ban would have to supported with extra investment in quitting programmes.

He says the transition would have to managed well, and investment would be needed for both inmates and prison officers for it to work.
