Sunny skies are on the way for Easter Weekend, despite earlier grim reports of rain and gales.

The Easter forecast continues to improve with a series of highs expected to cross the South Island throughout the weekend, bringing a sunny and mainly calm weekend, with light winds across the island.

Auckland to Kapiti Coast, Bay of Plenty and Taupo are all expected to be fine today, apart from a few areas of cloud.

MetService said in the Coromandel Peninsula remaining rain in the north is expected to clear this morning with the holiday hotspot becoming fine.

Wellington and Marlborough have cloudy areas but any remaining showers are expected to clear this afternoon.

However, MetService said Gisborne and Hawke's Bay are in store for more rain , with some heavier falls about the ranges tonight, as they attempt to mop up from a week of wild weather.

The weekend ahead

In the South Island it is predicted to be mainly fine on Friday and Saturday.

However, there could be cloud along the east coast, and drizzle about the Kaikoura Coast and the Marlborough Sounds at first on Friday, with drizzle developing about Fiordland on Sunday.

Cloudy skies down the coastlines should clear by Easter Sunday.

Rain and easterlies will linger on the east coast of the North Island tomorrow, with showers possible in north and east on Friday and Saturday. Little rain is expected in the west.

Most of the wet weather is expected to ease for the North Island by Sunday with light winds and sunny skies expected to last through to Easter Monday.

Gisborne and East Cape can expect damp weather all weekend.
