Students around New Zealand are to rally on Monday to protest against a government plan to end universal membership of student associations.
The final reading of the voluntary student membership bill is scheduled for Wednesday and the law is expected to take effect in January next year.
The bill will "undermine independent representation on campus and put important student services at risk", New Zealand Union of Student Associations (NZUSA) co-president David Do said.
It could result in many aspects of student life being shut down, he said.
The government has not adopted NZUSA's suggested compromise to make students automatic members of their student association but refund their association fees if they opted out in the first four weeks of term.
Students on Monday are to rally at Auckland, Otago and Waikato universities.
