University students have been threatened with a hefty fine for selling Christmas trees on Auckland's Franklin Road.

The road is famous for its Christmas lights, which attracts thousands of visitors every December.

Franklin Road resident Matthew Tolich says he and his flatmates agreed to let friends sell Christmas trees from their flat to recoup the costs of lights and electricity.

He says 18 neighbours complained to the Auckland City Council and they have now been threatened with a $750 fine.

Tolich thinks the neighbours do not want Franklin Road to become commercialised but says it already has because of the vending machines.

He says the sellers have tried to respect the culture of the street by not having a tacky stall and just having one sign outside.
