Almost 50,000 Year 11 students went into three hours of lockdown for their end of year English exams on Tuesday.
Level one English is the biggest exam on the NCEA calendar and the three hour exam had five papers.
The end of year exam marathon began with three scholarship exams on Saturday, starting with Classical Studies requiring three essays in three hours.
In the next few weeks, over 140,000 high school pupils will be tested, receiving reminders about their exam times through the social networking site Twitter.
And with nearly two million papers to process, the Qualifications Authority is flat out.
"We take over 18 months in preparation for the exam cycle itself. So there are 4,000 supervisors ready right now for the students to come into the exam halls. There are 2,000 markers waiting for the exams scripts," says spokesperson Bali Haque.
