The end of year exam marathon has begun as the first three scholarship exams got underway on Saturday.
In the next few weeks, over 140,000 high school pupils will be tested, with Classical Studies being first up with three essays in three hours.
There's been some last minute cramming.
"(I'm feeling) kind of nervous. Yeah, I'm kind of ready I guess, done a bit of study. I have made huge cheat sheets, just to get the information embedded in your head," says Olivia Toebes, a scholarship candidate.
Others are worried they have not done enough swat.
"I don't think I can fit anymore in!" says another student.
Only 11 students sat the Classics exam at Wellington Girls' so just one classroom was required. But on Tuesday over ten of the rooms will be needed for NCEA level 1 English, which is the largest of all the exams with more than 47,000 candidates.
To prevent pupils missing their exams, students can now receive reminders from NZQA through the social networking site Twitter.
And with nearly two million papers to process, the qualifications authority is flat out.
"We take over 18 months in preparation for the exam cycle itself. So there are 4000 supervisors ready right now for the students to come into the exam halls. There are 2000 markers waiting for the exams scripts," says Bali Haque of NZQA.
Wellington Girls' amongst many others will be eagerly awaiting those results when they come back in mid January.
The NCEA level one, two and three exams start on Monday.
