The issue of education costs sparked a protest at Auckland University last night where around 60 students staged a sit in at the campus library.

The library was meant to close at 9.00pm but the students refused to leave initiating a protest that was part of a national day of action.

The protesters say they were seeking to reclaim the University and stem what they describe as an attack on student power.

Two people were arrested for unruly behaviour before the protest was shut down.

Meanwhile in Wellington, Newstalk ZB is reporting that Victoria University students clashed with security guards while protesting yesterday.

More than 100 students marched to deliver a letter outlining their concerns to Vice Chancellor Pat Walsh.

Students allege that security officers blocked access and then tried to push them down the stairs. They claim several protesters were punched several in the head.

Police were called but no arrests were made or injuries reported.

The students were protesting ongoing cuts and redundancies.
