An American woman injured while skiing at Mount Hutt last week has died.

The 21-year-old student was skiing with a friend off trail on the lower part of the mountain when she slid 130 metres over rocks.

The woman sustained serious injuries in the accident last Thursday and has died in Christchurch hospital.

Mount Hutt Ski Area Manager Dave Wilson says their thoughts are with the woman's family who are in Christchurch.

The ski area is conducting an internal investigation into the accident.
