MetService is warning there will be strong winds across the lower North Island on Sunday.

Forecaster Heath Gullery says there is a cold front moving up the South Island, with stiff north-westerlies in front of it.

He says they will get to gale force around higher parts of Wellington and the Wairarapa, extending through to southern and central Hawke's Bay.

Gullery says the winds will ease through Wellington and much of Wairarapa on Sunday evening, but there will be west-north-west gales through Tararua and the Hawke's Bay overnight.

Wind warnings are in force for drivers.

Gusts of 120kms an hour are likely which means damage to trees and power lines is possible.

Meanwhile, Strong winds are hampering the Wairarapa's annual wine and food festival on Sunday.

A few marquees at Toast Martinborough had apparently taken off, Sergeant Mark Oliver, of central police communications, said.

No injuries had been reported, he said.

The event attracts about 10,000 people.
