A power outage to nearly 700 homes in Northland may have been caused by a stray bullet.

Helena Bay, Oakura and Bland Bay had no electricity from 4:30am on Saturday until midday today.

Northpower's Graham Dawson says a helicopter was needed to find the fault, near Mokau hill, and damage to an insulator and conductor suggest it may have been hit by a bullet.

Dawson says crews had been working all weekend to find the problem but were hindered by the difficult terrain.
