A facebook group has been set up to help the thousands of travellers who are stranded in NZ due to volcanic eruptions in Iceland find cheap or even free accommodation.

The Stranded in New Zealand group has been organised by Tourism New Zealand and encourages Kiwi accommodation providers, activity operators, restaurants, bars and individuals with room to spare to register their details so that tourists who are unable to leave the country can enjoy their extended stay.

Hundreds of business and people have already answered the call with many offering free motel and hotel rooms or even just a space in a spare room to those who can prove they've been delayed by the volcanco ash which has closed much of Europe's air space since last Thursday.
