A shallow trough of low pressure over the North Island will cause bands of heavy rain and a few thunderstorms over many central and southern North Island areas on Wednesday evening.
Further short spells of heavy rain can be expected over the central North Island hill country from about Kawhia and Tokoroa down to Wanganui and the Ruahine ranges, with isolated thunderstorms.
Heaviest falls are now likely about the hill country of Wanganui, Taihape and South Taranaki, where 30-50mm could fall in localised thundery falls. Lesser amounts of rain are expected further north.
MetService advises people in these areas to be particularly careful around streams as these localised heavy falls could cause stream levels to rise quickly. Driving conditions will also be hazardous in heavy rain and hail.
Heavy rain warning
Areas affected: The central North Island hill country from Kawhia and Tokoroa down to Taihape and Wanganui, including Taranaki, Tongariro national park and the Ruahine ranges.
