The National Assessment Bureau is brushing off concerns over its new focus on domestic issues.
Until recently the spy agency has been called the External Assessment Bureau and its role has been to assess international situations.
But the government has widened the agency's scope and instead of stopping at the border the NAB can now report on local concerns.
A spokesman says the change will mean information is more streamlined and does not impact on civil liberties. He has stressed that it is impartial organisation.
And the spokesman says the bureau is the smallest agency supporting police as they gear-up for the World Cup. He says its primary job is to assess the political stability of the nations taking part in the competition.
The bureau will be forming a snapshot of the countries, and the possible impacts their politics could have here.
