AA Tourism says the prospect of changing the spelling of Wanganui to include an "h" is a task of massive scale.

It is up to Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson to make the final decision on a recommendation from the Geographic Board that the city of Wanganui should have an H added.

AA Tourism Limited produces about six million New Zealand maps and guides each year.

CEO Peter Blackwell says if the change goes ahead, the company will need to be watchful because the name appears in many different publications.

He says not every map is reprinted every year so whatever decision's made, Wanganui is going to be without an "h" for a long time to come.
