Police have named the man who was killed in a crash between two vehicles near Taupo.

He was Christopher Gary Hayman, 20, from Marton.

Hayman died at the scene of the crash last night after his Ford car collided with Toyota 4x4 vehicle on State Highway One at Hatepe Hill.

His northbound car crossed the centre line and collided head on with the southbound Toyota, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

A 55-year-old Taupo man, who was driving the Toyota, was cut from the wreckage by emergency services and flown to Waikato Hospital with serious, but not life threatening injuries.

"From the damage sustained to both vehicles it is clear that speed was a contributing factor in this crash," Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said.

Police said the speed limit in the area is 100 kilometres an hour and weather and road conditions at the time were wet.

Taupo Police want to hear from anyone who saw a 2003 Blue Ford Falcon station wagon that was missing a front bumper, between Marton and Taupo from 1pm onwards on February 28.
