The Auckland SPCA has taken action against the controversial Catcha Crayfish games.
The machines are used in a handful of pubs around the North Island, where people can try their luck at grabbing a crayfish using mechanised arm devices.
Patrick Chandulal, who owns the Catcha Cray franchise, says the game is entertainment.
"(The game) is fine as long as the welfare of the living thing is not being compromised. I have evidence from experts that the crayfish are fine," he says.
However SPCA executive director Bob Kerridge says the crayfish are subjected to unnecessary suffering and they have taken steps to prevent further trauma.
Officers have visited the pubs sporting the games and made them inoperable.
Kerridge says their investigation into the games is ongoing, and they haven't yet ruled out laying charges.
He believes officers across the country will follow their lead.
