The Auckland SPCA has announced it will be proceeding with charges for those involved in the killing of 33 dogs in Wellsford early last week.
The dogs were allegedly shot by two men with a .22 calibre rifle and a shotgun in a dispute between the dogs' owner Rowan Hargreaves and his neighbour Russell Mendoza at a rural property near Wellsford.
The SPCA has been investigating whether the deaths were humane.
Executive director Bob Kerridge says it is clear from investigations including necropsy reports, and witness interviews the dogs suffered a considerable pain and distress in their execution.
He says they cannot tolerate the killing of animals in this fashion and charges must be brought.
The exact nature of the charges and the person or persons to be charged will be disclosed after the charges are filed with the Court.
Most of the evidence had come from SPCA labs, the inspection of the dogs bodies and witnesses.
The SPCA is arranging to interview the two men suspected of
killing the dogs through their lawyer, Kerridge says.
