The Auckland SPCA is calling for tougher anti-cruelty laws and more powers for its inspectors.

Acts of abuse such as a live goats being dragged behind a car have prompted the calls.

General manager David Lloyd-Barker says Auckland SPCA inspectors have prosecuted 40 people in the last year under the Animal Welfare Act.

He says the problem is getting worse and worse with more cases of deliberate cruelty to animals.

There was even a case of a dog being beaten and stabbed, then barbecued.

Lloyd-Barker is asking for harsher sentences and more powers for inspectors.

This includes powers of search and arrest, which organisations like the SPCA have in America.
