Christchurch firefighters were called to about half a dozen couch burning incidents last night.
South Island fire communications say it has been a growing trend in Christchurch over about the last 12 months.
The couch fires are generally at parties in suburbs around Canterbury University, including Riccarton, Ilam and Bryndwr.
The Fire Service says the tradition of burning couches was prevalent in Dunedin about five years ago but has since died down there.
Police and Canterbury University are trying to stamp out the trend before it becomes a tradition for Christchurch students.
