SPARC is praising the governments decision to put $82 million into getting children active in schools, saying that this issue, is not just one concerning health.
Prime Minister John Key announced the initiative, aimed at helping more children participate in organised sport on Tuesday.
The Kiwisport initiative will provide $24m to primary schools, $21m to secondary schools and $37m to a regional fund to be administered by Regional Sports Trusts.
SPARC spokesman John Reid says they are delighted "that the government is starting to realise that the value of sport to young people is not just a health issue."
He says he praises the Minister of sport, education and health for getting together and "deciding that this was an area of priority for expenditure."
"An investment in sport, has much more benefit for children, than just health issues," he says. "Sport offers a lot of learning for children, in leadership, teamwork and teaches them to play but the rules."
