Civil Defence is warning Southlanders to be prepared for another shake.
It comes on the back of Wednesday night's magnitude 7.8 earthquake, and subsequent aftershocks.
Group Civil Defence coordinator Neil Cruickshank says the weekend is a good opportunity to stock up on emergency supplies like torches.
He says people should also be reviewing their emergency plans.
Cruickshank says the further away people are from earthquake-prone areas, the less prepared they tend to be.
He says there are a lot of people with good intentions, but they are not always followed through with actions.
Southland Civil Defence says people shoul not be complacent just because there was not a lot of damage.
Cruickshank says Civil Defence does not want people to think they have survived this unscathed, so therefore earthquakes are not an issue.
He says the next quake could be quite a damaging one.
