Southern Fiordland was rocked by two earthquakes within 20 minutes late on Thursday night.
The first, a 4.7 Richter magnitude earthquake, struck at 11.16pm, 80km west of Te Anau at a depth of 8km, GNS Science reported.
It was followed by another in the same location at 11.35pm. The second quake measured 4.8 and was at a depth of 7km.
