The Desert Road has reopened as well as State Highway 5 from Taupo to Napier where farmers have been hardest hit by snow storms.
Hundreds of children made the most of the snow that closed SH5 for over two days, making snow balls while the sun shone on Wednesday.
Cars once again lined the Napier-Taupo road but this time by choice, the white stuff providing the perfect school holiday distraction.
"I've been going down the hills on my plastic bag at like 100 miles an hour," says one youngster.
Even the parents couldn't' resist.
"We thought we'd come up check the snow out for 10, 15 minutes and we've been here two hours," says one woman.
The snow was still causing some problems, a motorist saying she had lost her car keys in it. Thankfully they were quickly recovered.
But some have suffered in the freezing cold. On Wednesday the Kings pulled nearly 100 lambs from just two paddocks and they still have dozens more to check.
"Where there's livestock there's dead stock, you have to accept some deaths but when it gets up like this, it's not as good," says farmer Murray King.
Thankfully the snow is melting fast.
Three days ago the road was covered in snow and parked cars but now things are getting back to normal.
Power companies are still working to re-connect the last few customers but say most of the work is done.
While the snow is disappearing the memories of this storm, both good and bad, won't evaporate as quickly.
