Heavy snow has closed the Desert Road, on State Highway One between Rangipo and Waiouru, and all alternative routes other than via New Plymouth or Napier.
Earlier Friday evening motorists were urged to use the detours on State Highways 46, 47, 4 and 49 but at 12.40am Saturday an advisory was issued that the alternative route via National Park is also now closed, with heavy snow in the area.
That means the only other alternative north/south route is via New Plymouth or Napier.
This may change overnight so check the Transit website for the latest information.
A large landslip is also blocking the northbound lane on SH5, east of Taupo.
Contractors were working to clear the slip earlier tonight, approximately 3 kms south of Matea Road, Waipunga, but motorists in the area were asked to drive with extreme care.
