A cold snap that chilled the South Island on Saturday has moved north, with heavy snow and rain expected across the North Island later on Sunday.
The MetService advised snow would fall to about 600 metres across the central plateau and western Hawke's Bay, with up to 20cm of snow accumulating by Monday morning.
The Desert Road, Napier-Taupo Road and Napier-Taihape Road would be affected by snow and drivers were advised to take care.
Snow was also possible on Rimutaka Hill Road, while Fiordland's Milford Road would have up to 5cm of snowfall up till 1pm Sunday, and snow would develop in Porters Pass in Canterbury from midday down to 200 metres, but would clear late Monday morning.
The Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay would experience heavy rain on Sunday and early Monday.
People in those areas should watch for rapidly rising streams and rivers, the MetService said.
Wellington's winds would reach speeds of about 100kmh on Sunday afternoon, while Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel would have thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon.
Between 20 and 25cm of snow fell around the Homer Tunnel in Fiordland on Saturday, and Southland towns experienced low temperature of around 4degC all day in Gore, 6degC in Lumsden and between 8 and 9degC in Invercargill.
