A light plane has crash landed on a reserve bordering the grounds of an Auckland secondary school.

The plane came down next to Macleans College in Pakuranga on Sunday afternoon.

Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says there was one person on board the aircraft who escaped without injury.

He says there were several reports from people using cellphones who described seeing a plane, believed to be a Stoddard-Hamilton Glasair, go down into the school's grounds.

Inspector Chris Robinson says the pilot was on his way up from Taupo, heading towards North Shore City. He says the pilot developed engine problems when he got near Eastern Beach and decided to do an emergency landing.

Robinson says the only damage to the plane was a bent propeller.
