The former employer of a security guard killed on his first night on the job has pleaded not guilty to failing to ensure his safety.

Charanpreet Dhaliwal, 22, was attacked on his first shift as a security guard while patrolling a west Auckland construction site last November. He died from serious head injuries.

His employer CNE Security pleaded not guilty to charges laid under the Health and Safety in Employment Act by the Department of Labour in the Waitakere District Court this morning.

CNE Security will appear in court for a status hearing on October 15.

Dhaliwal, a devout Sikh, was working to pay for his IT studies and raise money to send to his mother and brother who live in Punjab.

He had managed to raise $13,000 during the 18 months he had lived in New Zealand at the time of his death.
