Wellington police investigating the murder of Harold Skudder say they have finished their scene investigations at two sites, at Moonshine Hill Road and a house in Stokes Valley.

Skeletal remains believed to be those of the 38-year-old who was last seen in 2006 were found down a bank in Upper Hutt on Friday.

The discovery came after police received a tip-off about the disappearance of Skudder, who was officially reported missing in 2008.

Skudder was last seen at the Taita shops in 2006 and was reported missing by his mother a year later in January 2008.

Detective Inspector Shane Cotter says identification of the remains is expected from either dental records or DNA testing.

A 26-year-old man has appeared in court charged with Skudder's murder and has been remanded in custody until later this month with interim name suppression.

Detective Inspector Shane Cotter says officers will continue interviewing friends and family of Skudder and the man who has been charged.

Cotter says despite an arrest being made, he believes other people know about Skudder's disappearance and he is urging them to come forward. Police believe the two were known to each other but will not say how.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else.
