Six men have appeared in court in Auckland after customs and police busted an alleged multi-million dollar methamphetamine smuggling deal.
Four Japanese and two Iranian men were arrested on Wednesday after methamphetamine worth millions of dollars was found in their baggage.
Japanese nationals Toshiyuka Toda, 52, Kazuhiko Takiguchi, 39, Takako Takiguchi, 31, and Yoshinori Tanakawa, 40, were arrested at Auckland Airport on Wednesday, the New Zealand Herald reported.
The newspaper said customs officers were believed to have found about 4kg of methamphetamine valued at $4 million.
Customs and police orchestrated a "controlled delivery" of the drugs to a hotel room in Auckland and two Iranian men, Nader Ghaffari, 38, and Fardien Nourian, 42, were arrested.
The six men appeared in the Auckland District Court on Thursday on drugs charges.
Ghaffari was released on bail and the other five were remanded in custody to reappear early next month.
Police minister Judith Collins is expected to release more details about the seized drugs on Friday.
