Six men have been arrested after a man was stabbed in Napier on New Year's Day.

The men, aged between 15 and 20, are expected to appear in the Napier District Court today.

All six are charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful assembly, assault with a weapon and assault with intent to injure.

Luke Brown, 24, had been walking along Kennedy Rd with friend Wilbur Hiko when they were attacked. Hiko managed to flee after suffering several blows.

Brown had been stabbed in the lower stomach, causing bowel and stomach lacerations. A domestic carving knife was found near the scene.

Sam McKeich, a 24-year-old entree chef at the Mission winery, was walking home from New Year celebrations at about 2am when he came across Brown, who was critically injured.

Brown was taken to hospital and had emergency surgery.

Detective Sergeant Emmet Lynch said Brown and his family are "very pleased with this development and look forward to resolving this traumatic event".
