Shots fired at Whangarei police station

Whangarei police are on high alert after shots were fired at their team base in the early hours of this morning.

The Otangarei Neighbourhood Policing Team base on Matai Street in Otangarei received damage to its walls and windows when four shots were fired at around 4.30 am.

No one was in the building at the time.

Inspector Tracy Phillips said this incident is very concerning for police and could have led to a tragic outcome for the local community.

"The Neighbourhood Policing Team is working well with the Otangarei community and we are supporting them in every way we can," said Phillips.

"We will not tolerate this sort of action and will not be intimidated by anyone who chooses to do this."

Police are conducting scene examinations this afternoon.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw any suspicious activity in Matai Street in the early hours of this morning is urged to contact the Whangarei Police on 09 430 4500or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
