The gunned-down policeman and the man accused of attempting to kill him are lying in the same hospital in South Auckland.
A room at Middlemore Hospital became a courtroom on Wednesday as police charged the injured suspect with the attempted murder of the rookie policeman.
Not far away, 28-year-old Constable Jeremy Snow is recovering
from three gunshot wounds.
Police are still hunting a second man in relation to
the shooting in Papatoetoe .
Snow's father, David Snow, says his son is pleased to be alive and
it could have been a lot worse.
David Snow says his son remembers most of what happened just before dawn on Tuesday, particulary the pain as he was carried to the ambulance.
The officer had left his police car to check out a vehicle in a driveway with its hazards lights on when he was shot shot three times, in his legs and elbow. One shot hit his femoral artery causing heavy blood loss.
"You never expect these things to happen," says David
Snow.
The rookie constable spent more than seven hours in surgery.
His flatmate and cousin Daniel Harvey says Jeremy is doing well.
"He's still kind of got his sense of humour and making jokes as we were talking to him and he's doing really well," says Harvey.
Harvey says Snow, who has been in the police force for just a year, is born to be on the beat.
"He has that personality where he wants to be out there doing things in the community and helping people. So it kind of came naturally for him," he says.
David Snow says Jeremy enjoys being a policeman.
"He wanted to be one from a young age."
Investigations are continuing into what unfolded at the scene of the shooting on Buckingham Crescent.
Police say the alleged gunman did not live at the house where the car was parked.
He was admitted to the same hospital as Snow with police dog
bites received during his arrest after the incident.
The man, 28, who has interim name suppression, was remanded to
appear in Manukau District Court on January 12.
Police are now also looking for 43-year-old Darren Thomas Court.
Detective Inspector Mark Gutry of Counties Manukau Police says police believe Court was present at the time of the incident.
"We just want to speak with him and get his version of events."
There are outstanding arrest warrants for Court over unrelated matters.
The family of Constable Snow say the events of the past few days will not put him off being a policeman, a job he loves.
