The father of an Auckland actor who police say tried to engineer his own shooting says he wants to return to work.

Rob Mokaraka, 36, remains in Auckland Hospital after being shot by police on July 27 outside his home in suburban Point Chevalier.

His father, Andy Mokaraka, on Monday said his son was on the improve.

"All he wants to do now is get better, get out of bed and get back to work," he told the New Zealand Herald.

"Yup, he's talking away, but it's hard to talk sometimes because of the pain. He has hoses going out of everywhere, just the normal sort of thing."

Police last week said Rob Mokaraka rang 111 to notify them of an armed, agitated man in the area, and then dressed up as the man.

When police arrived he allegedly advanced on them carrying a meat cleaver and two knives and was then shot once in the chest by a police officer.

He was subsequently charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault with a weapon.
