Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Palmerston North.
The man was found dead with a gunshot wound, in the grounds of a Heretaunga Street flat about 3.40pm.
The firearm, believed to have been used to kill him, was found by his side.
Police spokeswoman Kim Perks says detectives at Palmerston North Police Station were talking to a man who had "an altercation" with the victim shortly before his death.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said it was too early to speculate "exactly how the dead man came by his fatal injuries".
Police had not yet identified the man and would conduct a full scene examination and area investigation tomorrow, he said.
