Sharks have been sighted close to shore at several popular beaches north of Auckland.
The first sightings were reported at about 1.30pm on Thursday and groups of them have been hanging around ever since at Omaha, Waipu and Ruakaka beaches.
Lifeguards dropped their flags and got swimmers out of the water on several occasions.
The sharks range in size from a metre up to two-and-a-half metres in length.
It is thought they are bronze whalers.
