A team of researchers is heading to the waters off Stewart Island to study White Pointer sharks.

The researchers from the Department of Conservation, NIWA and Auckland University will be carrying out their study in the waters around the Titi Islands until the start of April.

DOC shark expert Clinton Duffy says the team will be using a mixture of minced fish and fish oil called burley to attract the big creatures.

He says divers and kayakers should steer well clear of the areas where the research is being carried out.
