A convicted sex offender is back behind bars after buying a frisbee to lure a seven-year-old girl to play in a kindergarten grounds.
It was only the intervention of the girl's mother and members of the public that prevented Jared Paul Simmonds from offending again, Christchurch District Court was told on Thursday.
Simmonds, a 31-year-old vineyard worker, was released from prison on parole on October 7 after serving a two year, eight month sentence for doing an indecent act with a girl, the Christchurch Court News website has reported.
One of his parole conditions was that he have no contact with any child under 16 unless being supervised by an approved adult.
He pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of abducting a child, and breaching the release conditions.
He has been in custody since his arrest on January 15 and Judge Stephen Erber further remanded him in custody for sentencing on April 16.
He ordered a pre-sentence report but ruled out home detention and community detention as options.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Brocas said Simmonds formulated a plan on January 15, to buy a frisbee and then go to a park to find a girl playing alone, and play a game with her.
He went to Westfield in Riccarton and bought the frisbee and then cycled to New Brighton and Halswell looking in parks for young girls.
At a dairy in Halswell he saw a seven-year-old girl and said hello.
He then waited outside for her to come out.
When she came out of the shop he asked if she wanted to go to a park, but she said she was not allowed.
Simmonds walked off but stopped outside a kindergarten along the road.
He saw the girl walking along on the other side of the road.
He jumped the kindergarten fence to attract her attention and then convinced her to go into the grounds to play with the flying disc.
"He took her to an area back from the fence to prevent her being seen by anyone," Brocas said.
They played and then sat and talked for about 10 minutes before the girl's mother and members of the public found them.
Simmonds told police he lured the girl away from the fence to "get her away from parents or other people who might stop them being together".
After his arrest, police praised the actions of the mother and neighbours.
The mother had quickly begun searching when she realised the girl was not where she was meant to be, and neighbours had seen her and directed the mother to where she was.
