Gale force winds predicted to batter Auckland are taking their time arriving.
Philip Duncan of the Weather Watch Centre says the subtropical low driving the winds has slowed and turned east instead of south.
He says gale force winds have arrived in Te Aroha and Paeroa in the eastern Waikato, and gale force gusts are reported in Whangaparaoa.
He says these winds are expected in eastern and northern parts of Auckland on Saturday night.
Some gusts on the Hauraki Gulf have been recorded at 132 kilometres an hour, and 120 at Cape Reinga in the Far North.
Big seas are reported at Orewa just north of Auckland.
Heavy rain is predicted for Hawke's Bay and southeast gales for Taupo on Sunday.
A severe weather warning has been issued for the Far North.
Heavy rain is falling right through Northland and the town of Kaeo is taking a battering.
The Kaeo River is rising, with high tide expected around 10:30pm.
Motorists are being urged to take extreme care.
There's flooding on State Highway 10 at Okaihau, while fog is causing delays on the Napier-Taupo Highway.
A police spokesman from the Northern Communications Centre says trees are down in some areas due to the strong winds.
It is understood power has been cut to Whitianga.
