MetService reports that thunderstorm activity in the Wellington area has now eased.
According to meteorologists, the thunderstorm was seen brewing over the Cook Strait, and hit Wellington at around 8.15pm.
By 8.30pm, both heavy rain and lightning began to pound the region.
MetService has now lifted the severe thunderstorm warning for Wellington, Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata.

The thunderstorms were predicted to last until around 9.30pm tonight.
Rain showers are forecasted for Wellington tomorrow, but should ease by early afternoon.
