Severe gales are likely to hit the eastern part of New Zealand from Hastings to Masterton on Wednesday.
MetService says the windy weather is the result of a strong west to southwest flow that should over the country at first, changing to strong cold southwesterlies bringing showers to most places.
The southwesterlies should die away on New Year's Eve.
On Friday northwest gales, sometimes severe, will batter eastern parts from Wairarapa to Southland.
A front late on Friday is expected to deliver heavy rain to Fiordland and south Westland, and on Saturday morning to western Nelson, Buller, and northern Westland.
